Root was born out of a dream to create a place where team and guests alike feel amazing. We seek to make every experience fantastic and are on a mission to help you feel awesome through our tasty food and our ‘rootytooty’ welcome.
We make sourdough pizza, awesome coffee and freshly baked bread from our home at Sundlingska Gården in beautiful Tavelsjö. Our pizzas are little out of the ordinary and not what you might usually see in pizzerias. Alongside our pizzas we offer a range of other yummy things including weekend brunch which you can eat in or have delivered to Umeå.
Throughout the year our offer changes with the season and, alongside our tasty food, we schedule a range of events including yoga, ice & open water swimming, ice skate & snow shoe hire, the Tavelsjö Hill Climb Challenge as well as collaborating with TAIK, Toughest Training Group Umeå and others to create fantastic outdoor events here.
To see what we’re up to now, have a look over on our Instagram page. For a little more on us and why we’re here, carry on reading…
Kerstin and Dan, the founders of Root, moved to Tavelsjö in November of 2019 intent on creating something awesome. Having both spent the previous 15 years working in restaurants, hotels and pubs in London, they moved to Västerbotten intent on curating a space where people to could feel great.
Whilst searching for a restaurant space in Umeå they were told about Sundlingska Gården, an old community space between Tavelsjöberget and lake Tavelsjön. After looking around they signed a 4 month contract to create a pop-up pizza place for the ice track season. Why pizza? Well, Kerstin’s passion is sourdough baking and it seemed the best way to convert this passion into something both super tasty and fun
Vintercafe opened on January 4th 2020 and quickly became a post outdoor activity hangout. After a day on the icetrack, on one of the ten tops, skiing, cycling or ice fishing, Vintercafe became the place to sit back and relax over pizza by fire. Within weeks Kerstin and Dan realised this was the community they had been looking for when leaving London and approached the Bygdegård about a long term lease.
At the start of May, the couple signed a 10 year lease at Sundlingska Gården and re-branded as Root on the 1st of June.
